Sound
Speakers
Loudspeakers are the final part of a sound system that actually make the literal sound you hear.
Headphones
Like speakers, headphones make the actual sound but they fit directly on your head.
Components
All-in-Ones
Just add speakers. These devices combine a built-in source with a power and pre amp for a complete sound system all in one box.
Integrated Amps
Combines a power amp and pre amp. Just add speakers and sources to complete a sound system.
Power Amps
The most powerful component of a sound system, amps drive your speakers. Power amps require a pre-amp to manage volume and input sources.
Pre Amps
Pre amps give you the ability to change inputs and volume before sending sound to a power amp. Most turntables require a phono stage pre amp.
DACs
Digital to Analog Converters allow digital components such as computers or mobile phones/tablets to be connected to a sound system.
Headphone Amps
Combine a pre amp and power amp that are designed for headphones.
Sources
Network Players
Play music from a streaming service or audio files stored on a local disk or network drive.
Turntables
Vinyl records were the most common format from 1950 - 1990. Streaming music is more popular today but records had a renaissance in the late 2000's and have become the most popular physical music format again.
CD Players
The compact disc replaced vinyl as the most popular format from 1990 - 2000. CD's have mostly been replaced by streaming services but remain part of many systems for people who have large CD collections.
DAPs
Digital Audio Players are portable devices that play Hi-Res music from streaming services or local storage.
